MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION/REFERRAL



WHAT IS COVERED?
Assistance with medical transportation costs is provided to access health services when those services cannot be accessed within the community of residence and are not covered by any federal\provincial program. Taking into consideration the most economical and efficient mode of transportation; the client's current health status, medical transportation\reimbursement benefits are provided to the client fromt point-of-pick-up to the nearest appropriate facility as follows:
  • Referral Van
  • Public transportation\Greyhound Bus
  • Taxi
  • Air Medivac\Air Ambulance
  • Scheduled Chartered Flights
  • Escort\Interpreter
  • Meals
  • Accommodation


WHAT'S NOT COVERED?
  • Non-health or non-medical benefits such as travel to funeral; compassionate; pick-up\drop off of prescriptions; court-ordered treatment/assessment etc.
  • Distant medical facility other than to the nearest facility
  • Medical services that are not listed with Bigstone NIHB
  • Client who self-discharged
  • Benefit(s) that are/can be covered by another insurance plan
  • Incarcerated client appointments
  • Second opinion appointments
  • Provincial/Federal funded benefits


HOW CAN YOU ACCESS THE BENEFIT?
  • By appointment with a licensed general practitioner
  • By referral to a specialist
  • By appointment\referral to an approved Medical\Health facility


WHO CAN PRESCRIBE AND PROVIDE BENEFITS?
  • Licensed Medical Doctor
  • Specialist
  • Any licensed\certified medical health care worker such as a Nurse; Psychologist; Orthopedist; Pediatrician; Paramedic; Emergency Medical\Response Technician (EMT\ERT) etc.
  • A licensed Medical Transportation\Referral driver
  • Bigstone Medical Transportation\Referral Clerk


WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIIES?
  • Ensure that you phone in your appointment date and time to Medical Transportation\Referral at least 2 days prior to your appointment
  • Whenever possible schedule 2 or more appointments for the same day
  • Follow the transportation guidelines provided to you
  • Inform the service provider with whom you have an appointment that you are from Bigstone Cree Nation
  • Inform the service provider that you have other insurance coverage, if you have other insurance coverage besides Bigstone NIHB
  • Attend your scheduled appointment(s)
